现在几段英语语段,急需翻译其大概意思,请各位英语高手伸出救援之手
第一篇: Six percent of Americans surveyed recently are addicted to the Internet. Such addiction threatens the stability of both their work and home lives, according to a report by Dr. David Greenfield. This report found that six percent of the 18000 people surveyed were addicted to browsing the Internet.
If the result is extrapolated to take in the US population as a whole, such findings could mean that millions of Americans have found a “new drug”. David, a psychologist from Connecticut, said that Internet addicts suffer symptoms similar to addicts hooked on drugs or other activities. Internet users said that they “almost always” found they lost track of time.
Another 83 percent of those surveyed had a preoccupation with going on-line and a majority (58 percent) of them wanted to spend more time on-line. Just as other addictions, addicts eventually realize that they need to either cut back or quit even if withdrawal will be difficult. The report found that 68 percent of Internet browsers have tried in vain to reduce the amount of time they waste on-line.
David posted a questionnaire on the website of ABC News for two weeks to question people about their Internet use. A majority of addicts (57 percent) go on-line to chat and 20 percent of the on-line users go shopping or trade stocks.
The cases of those who abused or were addicted to the Internet included people who got up in the middle of night to check their email and a cosmetic executive who was fired for spending on average of seven hours a day at work on the Internet.
第二篇:The game of golf has become more popular each year. Golf player enjoy spending time on the open, grassy areas on which the game is played. Yet, several international organizations say golf courses damage the environment.
One environment group, the Worldwatch Institute, has published a report about the problems with golf courses. It says studies show that most golf courses use large amounts of chemical poison and fertilizers. The grass often grows in sandy soil which fail to absorb the chemicals. So, the chemicals pollute natural water supplies.
Golf courses also require a lot of water. A study shows that one golf course in Thailand uses as much water as that needed by 6000 people.
Environmentalists also fear the expansion of golf courses will destroy natural areas. In Vietnam, the government sold a protected rainforest, Thu Duc forest near Saigon, to a golf course developer. In Laos, a Thai company recently won approval for building a golf course and a hotel in one of the country’s few remaining underdeveloped areas.
The Worldwatch Institute says golf courses are the fastest growing kind of land development in the world. There are about 25000 golf courses throughout the world.
Together, they already cover an area about the size of Belgium.
第三篇:One of the most unusual graduation speakers of the 1983 commencement season was not a person at all. The speaker was Robot Redford, a robot who delivered the commencement address at a community college in suburban Maryland.
The speaker, carefully programmed, arrived on the stage under its own power and proceeded to tell the audience of 658 graduates, their families, and friends that they would have to learn to work with robots and technology to solve society’s problems.
The robot described itself as an extension of a person to help humans increase the workload. Although this particular robot can be programmed to speak, the voice heard wasn’t that of the robot, because it was feared that the robot’s voice was not loud enough to carry throughout the hall. An amplified voice of a human was used instead, while the listeners watched the robot.
Robot Redford was followed by a person, William Bakaleinikoff, who spoke about the need for cooperation between people and technology. Mr. Bakaleinikoff’s experience with his topic included the fact that he had created Robot Redford and had provided the voice for the robot’s words to the graduates.
There was quite a bit of controversy over the choice of a robot as a commencement speaker. Some students thought it was insensitive and degrading to use a robot. Others thought the idea was clever and innovative.
“I’ll never forget this speech,” said one graduate, “you forget a political leader, but you won’t forget a robot.”
第四篇:In some places cars are forbidden in city centers altogether. In Florence (Italy), for instance, the whole of the city is only restricted to pedestrians from 7:30 in the morning until 6:30 in the evening.
Another idea is to make people pay if they want to bring their cars into the city center. They do this in Singapore. If you are bringing your car into the center you can be stopped, and if you’ve got less than four people in it then you have to pay.
The Netherlands, being such a flat country, is one place which is particularly fond of building cycle paths. There are now 14000 km of cycle paths there, so you can go anywhere by bike.
In some cities in Britain people are using what they call a Park and Ride scheme (方案). They build big car parks far away from city centers and you park your car there. Then there’s a bus or whatever for you to take to the city center, and you return to your car the same way.
In Hong Kong, for example, there’s a computer-based system which tracks cars’ movements in the city center and drivers are billed monthly according to when and how often they have driven into the city center.
第五篇:Monday, computer hackers vandalized (故意破坏) one of the government’s most popular Internet sites, preventing visitors from searching new legislation being considered by Congress.
The hackers altered the “Thomas” Web site of the Library of Congress, named after Thomas Jefferson and a favorite among journalists and researchers who need immediate information about bills under consideration on Capitol Hill (美国国会).
The vandals claimed to be “four hackers from a little country in Europe,” and changed the site to read: “U.S. Congress Web site----defeated!” The moniker (标记) they used, “Lamber Team,” is not particularly prominent among the computer underground, where groups and allegiances can be fluid.
They also published on the altered site the recipe they claimed to have used to gain access to the government’s computer running the service. They left what was said to be a software log that included part of a user’s identification number, but it was partially masked “to hide the users who make this possible.”
Monday’s attack was the most serious against a government World Wide Web site since the start of the year and similar in audacity to attacks last year against the Web sites for the FBI, Senate, U.S. Army and White House.
